Why I Still Believe in Modular Data Centers

Joaquin "Jack" Fagundo, writing from Parkland, FL, revisits his OCNJ Daily column on modular data centers in light of the AI buildout.

In September 2024, OCNJ Daily ran my column Modular Data Centers: Flexibility and Scalability for Modern Businesses. My argument was that prefabricated, modular capacity gives companies a faster and more measured way to grow their infrastructure than a traditional build. Two years later, I'd make the same argument, only louder.

The case rested on three things. Speed, because modules are built off site and deployed far faster than conventional construction. Paying as you grow, because capacity arrives in preconfigured blocks of power, cooling and networking, so organizations stop paying for space they won't use for years. And efficiency, because current designs use advanced cooling and can pair with renewable energy to keep the growth in energy use in check.

The organizations that benefit most are the ones with uneven or fast changing demand: e-commerce, healthcare and financial services, telecom providers extending service to rural areas, manufacturers running IoT, and logistics companies.

What's changed since then is AI. GPU clusters have pushed power density and deployment speed to the top of every data center conversation, and that makes the modular case stronger. When a cluster has to be online in months rather than years, standing up power and cooling in prefabricated blocks stops being a convenience and becomes a real planning advantage.
